Sustainabilty Awareness & considered production

We believe that style isn’t just about what you wear but how it’s made. Sustainability awareness is so important and an objective we will continue to review. We are commited to improving in this area as we evolve.

Our future aim is to use all natural materials, where we can. We want to be more sustainable in the materials and components we select. We are not there yet but it is our goal and we will continue to improve and review.

Our first target is to replace, the small amounts of synthetic components/materials we currently use in the inners, with natural leathers and textile when we order future collections. We feel that by putting this in writing here it will ensure our accountabilty to work on this for the next collection. One step at a time, we will continue to learn, adapt and develop our products. Ensuring we make considered conscious choices, about every aspect of our brand and shoes, without compromising on the quality and comfort of our footwear. (All materials used for each style are listed on each product page).

At Sole of Summer we create small batches of timeless footwear to avoid wasteful over production. Our classic designs will be wardrobe staples for years to come, rather than fleeting fashion trends. Our care guide will help you to give your shoes the long future they deserve.

Materials

Jute is a natural biodegradable fibre, generally grown without fertilisers and can absorb carbon. The breathable nature of jute allows for good air circulation helping to regulate temperature and moisture (in the unlined models), keeping your feet a little cooler on a warm day. Uppers/outers made of cotton, linen, super soft natural animal suede (all are Leather Working Group certified suppliers) are natural for our feet and biodegradable.

Our ribbons are made from recycled cotton and recycled polyester by a wonderful manufacturer in the same region where the shoes are made.

Our mailing boxes are made from 80% recycled paper and are 100% recyclable. Our branded tissue paper, stickers and tape are all plastic free, all made from paper and are all fully recyclable and the shoe dust bags are made from 100% cotton and are 100% compostable.

Small batch production

We are a small business, it has advantages, one of those is that we tend to produce small batches of shoes so we don’t over produce and create waste. (You're also less likely to meet another person wearing the same shoe as you!).

We have set ourselves the goal, to improve in all areas of sustainability. We are not there yet. We will strive to improve with future plans and collections.

ETHICAL MANUFACTURING

We personally have visited our shoe and ribbon manufacturers.

All our shoes are made in Europe, this is non-negotiable for us! It means that we can visit them, which is a wonderful experience. Watching and learning how they make by hand, the hand stitched models, in the traditionally way. The care and attention to detail in the making of all the shoes is their passion.
